The Gigabyte GA-GF2560
GeForce 256 graphic card

Friday, April 07, 2000

Introduction

The Gigabyte GA-GF2560 graphics card, as its name suggests, is based upon the Nvidia GeForce 256 GPU, and makes use of a RAMDAC clocked at 350MHz. The GA-GF2560 also sports 32MB of SDRAM memory running at 166MHz, with the graphics engine clocked at 120MHz.

As you might expect of this, and all other cards that use the GeForce 256 GPU, the GA-GF2560 supports "Transform and Lighting", and "Cube Environment Mapping" effects, along with a whole host of other features that are unavailable with other cards.

The particularities

Few things distinguish the GA-GF2560 from other GeForce 256 cards, as the former is designed to closely resemble the Nvidia reference design. The memory installed is EliteMT, 5.5ns SDRAM, which means it can run at upto 181.8MHz.

As Gigabyte would well admit, though, it is a bit strange that they arrived on the GeForce market with an SDR (Single Data Rate) card, when many of their competitors are fielding cards with DDR (Double Data Rate) memory, and that are consequently much faster.
